We all know that travel can sometimes put a strain on the wallet, so here’s a guide to the best free things to do in the stunning lakeside town of Lake Tekapo. Get ready to experience the magic of Lake Tekapo without spending a dime!

Take a Scenic Walk to Panoramic Lookouts

Lake Tekapo is a hiker’s paradise, with a network of trails that showcase the region’s diverse landscapes. Lace up your boots and embark on one of these scenic walks for breathtaking views without the price tag:

Lake Tekapo Walkway

This easy lakeside trail offers stunning views of the turquoise waters and surrounding mountains. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll or a morning jog.

Directions: The Lake Tekapo Walkway starts at the town center and follows the shoreline for approximately 3 kilometers. You can find the starting point near the Tekapo Information Center on State Highway 8.

Tips:

  • This is a shared-use track, so please be mindful of other users.
  • Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • There are several benches along the walkway where you can rest and enjoy the views.

Mount John Summit Track

For a more challenging hike, head up to the summit of Mount John. The panoramic views from the top are simply breathtaking, and you’ll also find the Mount John Observatory up there.

Directions: The Mount John Summit Track starts at the end of Godley Peaks Road, off State Highway 8.

You can find it on Google Maps here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jQGeFj3tYKkhP9dv6

Tips:

  • This is a steep track, so wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water.
  • Allow 2-3 hours for the return trip.
  • The Mount John Observatory offers guided stargazing tours at night (for a fee).

Cowans Hill Walk

This short but steep climb rewards you with 360-degree views of Lake Tekapo and the Mackenzie Basin. It’s a great spot for a sunset picnic.

Directions: The Cowans Hill Walk starts at the end of Cowans Hill Road, which is off Lakeside Drive.

You can find it on Google Maps here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6Yf4FWGH3vu2BKCZA

Tips:

  • Allow 30-45 minutes for the return trip.

Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd

The Church of the Good Shepherd is one of New Zealand’s most photographed landmarks, and for good reason. This charming stone church, nestled on the shores of Lake Tekapo, is a must-visit for any visitor to the area. Take a moment of reflection inside the church, or simply admire its beauty from the outside. You can find it on Pioneer Drive, just off State Highway 8.

Tips:

  • The church can get busy, especially during peak season. Try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a more peaceful experience.
  • The church is a popular wedding venue, so you may see a ceremony taking place during your visit.

Explore Lake Tekapo Regional Park

Lake Tekapo Regional Park is a sprawling natural playground, offering a range of recreational activities for all ages. Pack a picnic and spend the day exploring the park’s diverse landscapes, from the lakeshore to the open grasslands. You might even spot some of the region’s unique birdlife. Find the park at the end of Lilybank Road, off State Highway 8.

Tips:

  • There are several picnic tables and barbecue facilities available in the park.
  • Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • The park is home to a variety of birdlife, so bring your binoculars if you’re a keen birdwatcher.

Go Stargazing

Lake Tekapo is renowned for its incredible stargazing opportunities. As part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the night sky here is free from light pollution, allowing for unparalleled views of the stars. Grab a blanket, lie back on the lakeshore, and marvel at the Milky Way stretching across the sky.

Tips:

  • For the best stargazing experience, head to a dark location away from town lights. A good spot is along the lakefront, away from the main township.
  • Download a stargazing app on your phone to help you identify constellations and planets.
  • Allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness for at least 30 minutes.
  • If you’re visiting during the winter months, be sure to dress warmly.
