Discover The Best Lake Tekapo Water Sports

Kia ora, adventurers! Cristina here, ready to share my passion for Lake Tekapo and all the incredible water sports it offers. This alpine paradise, nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island, is renowned for its mesmerizing turquoise waters and the majestic backdrop of the Southern Alps. While biking, hiking, and 4wding are my usual go-to activities for exploring this stunning region, when the weather heats up, there’s nothing quite like taking to the water. Whether you crave a peaceful paddle or a thrilling jet boat ride, there’s a water activity here that will make your heart sing.

    Kayaking in Lake Tekapo

Kayaking is my personal favorite way to explore Lake Tekapo. It’s a serene and intimate experience that allows you to connect with the lake’s beauty at your own pace. Whether you prefer a leisurely paddle along the shoreline, soaking in the mountain vistas, or a more challenging adventure towards the lake’s center, kayaking caters to all.

There are no guided kayak tours, but Paddle Tekapo, the only hire shop in the region, will be able to provide you with tips and advice for making the most of your kayaking adventure.

Here are some of the best spots for kayaking in Lake Tekapo:

    • The Church of the Good Shepherd: This iconic church, situated on the lake’s edge, is a photographer’s dream. When the water level allows, paddle up close and capture its beauty from a unique perspective.
    • Motuariki Island: Take a break from paddling on this small island in the middle of the lake, and soak in the panoramic views.
    • The Lake Tekapo Footbridge: Glide under this bridge that spans the lake and offers stunning mountain vistas.

    Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is another fantastic way to experience Lake Tekapo. It’s a great way to enjoy a full-body workout while taking in the stunning scenery. The lake’s calm waters provide the perfect setting for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Here’s why I love stand-up paddleboarding in Lake Tekapo:

    • It’s a great way to get a different perspective of the lake. You’ll be able to see things from a higher vantage point, and you’ll also get a good workout.
    • It’s a relatively easy activity to learn. Even if you’ve never tried it before, you’ll be able to pick it up quickly.
    • It’s a great way to relax and de-stress. There’s something about being out on the water that is just so calming.
    • It’s a great way to connect with nature. You’ll be surrounded by stunning scenery, and you’ll have the opportunity to see some of the local wildlife.

If you’re new to stand-up paddleboarding, here are a few tips:

    • Start by paddling on your knees until you get your balance.
    • Use your core muscles to help you stay balanced.
    • Be aware of the wind and the current.
    • Wear a life jacket, even if you’re a strong swimmer.

      Boating and Waterskiing

For those seeking a more adrenaline-pumping adventure, boating and waterskiing are excellent choices. Feel the wind in your hair and the thrill of the speed as you zip across the lake’s pristine waters.

      Waterskiing:

Lake Tekapo’s expansive waters are perfect for waterskiing, but it’s important to be aware of designated areas and safety regulations. Before you head out, make sure to check with the Harbour Master or local authorities for information on where waterskiing is permitted.

      Jet Boating:

If you’re looking for an exhilarating experience, consider taking a jet boat ride with Tekapo Jet, the only jet boat company in the region. These powerful boats can navigate shallow waters and perform exciting maneuvers, providing a unique perspective of the lake and its surroundings.

Tips for Water Sports in Lake Tekapo

      • Book in Advance: If you’re interested in guided tours or lessons, it’s wise to book in advance, especially during peak season.
      • Choose the Right Time: Early mornings often offer calmer waters, ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking.
      • Dress Appropriately: Dress in layers, considering the weather and water temperature.
      • Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
